Born September 3, 1956, Chicago native actor/writer/director Gene Wolande came to Los Angeles after completing his Master of Fine Arts Degree and performing/directing for a number of years as a company member of the prestigious Dallas Theater Center. He first came to attention of Hollywood in the 1985 hit RoboCop (1987), and has since been seen in numerous major films, including the critically acclaimed L.A. Confidential (1997), The Negotiator (1998), A Civil Action (1998), Chaplin (1992), and Best Laid Plans (1999). On television, he has recurred on the the highly praised HBO series "Carnivàle" (2003), and guest-starred on shows such as "Desperate Housewives" (2004), "ER" (1994), "Married with Children" (1987), and "Party of Five" (1994). As a writer, he has worked on such diverse shows as "The Wonder Years" (1988) and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1993). His screenplay Slivers Oakley was honored by Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope Screenplay Competition. In 2001, he wrote and directed the film Three Shots (2001), which was highlighted at the Director's View Film Festival, the Sarasota Film Festival, The Ashland Independent Film Festival, and the New York Independent Film Festival. He has also worked as a dialect coach, film history professor, and taught acting with Steppenwolf Theatre founder 'Jeff Perry (I)'. He is finishing the suspense-thriller, Timeframe, and co-producing a film based on Chicago's traditional 16 inch No-Gloves softball.

He was a prisoner of the Japanese during World War 2, and once spent six months in the cooler for stealing a tin of corned beef.
He suggested the marching p.o.w.'s whistling "Colonel Bogey" in The Bridge On The River Kwai, to the Director, David Lean.
Because he had first hand experience of Japanese p.o.w. camps, he was paid an extra £5.00 per week by David Lean to act as a consultant on the film Bridge on the River Kwai.

Percy Herbert Mini Biography

The massive brooding face and nose of British actor Percy Herbert is familiar to movie goers and TV audiences alike. A seemingly unlikely stage discovery by no one less than the great Dame Sybil Thorndike of British theater, Herbert moved into movie roles by the early 1950s. Initially fitting in as a featured cockney character, he nevertheless moved on to a wide variety of roles, especially as British and American soldier characters, some notable early ones being in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and The Guns of Navarone (1961). An interesting coincidence was that his character name was Grogan in both movies - though he was promoted from a private in the first movie to a sergeant in the second. He always seemed at home, lending a believable accent and memorable presence to such as: the menacing baron who joins in the killing of Archbishop Thomas Becket, 'Richard Burton (I)', in Becket (1964), the hapless Confederate soldier-with a broad southern accent of Mysterious Island (1961), the sensible Scots-American deputy Mac Gregor in TV's short-lived Cimarron Strip (1968) with 'Stuart Whitman'. In the course of over 90 film appearances, Herbert fitted in and lent to genres from fantasy and horror to history and drama with a sort of sturdy and matter-of-fact competence which makes him a most memorable big and small screen presence.

Mona Washbourne Mini Biography

Beloved round and roly-poly British character player Mona Washbourne was a natural symbol for the working class as much of her early career was in playing midwives, barmaids, nannies, landladies and factory workers. Born November 27, 1903, in Birmingham, England, the daughter of Arthur Edmund Washbourne and his wife Kate (Robinson), the piano was to be her early passion and she initially trained at the Birmingham School of Music. Following concerting on the stage and broadcast playing on radio, she made her professional stage debut in 1924 with the "Modern Follies" concert party as both pianist and soubrette. From this point she delved herself completely into acting and went on tour with the "Fol-De-Rols" revue for three seasons, developing a special flair for bawdy, eccentric comedy. She performed in various repertory companies and earned her first major dramatic success on the London stage in 1937 with "Mourning Becomes Electra." On the quirkier side she won kudos for her Madame Arcati in "Blithe Spirit" (1945) and for her doting journalist in "The Winslow Boy" (1946). She went on to transfer her role in The Winslow Boy (1948) to film in the postwar years and saw a new avenue for her talents open up. While most of Mona's early film roles tended toward the small and dowdy, they were also quite colorful and seldom failed to make some sort of impression. They also grew in size as years passed. She played a midwife in Doctor in the House (1954); the older, ill-fated first wife to Bluebeard-like charmer 'Dirk Bogarde' in Cast a Dark Shadow (1957); the protagonist's mum in Billy Liar (1963) (another role she originated on stage in 1960); the no-nonsense Higgins housekeeper in My Fair Lady (1964); an aristocratic old shrew who employs psycho 'Albert Finney' in the remake of Night Must Fall (1964); and a doddering aunt to another psychopath 'Terence Stamp' in The Collector (1965). Continuing to impress on the stage with roles in 'Noel Coward''s "Nude with Violin" (1957) and "Present Laughter" (1958), she also appeared to great effect in "Misalliance" (1967) and was a natural for her perplexed aunt role in a madcap production of "Harvey" (1975). Here in the States she earned a Tony nomination for her contribution in "Home" (1970). Mona crowned her career remarkably alongside 'Glenda Jackson' as the dithery maiden aunt who lives with her eccentric niece, the poet Stevie Smith, in the play "Stevie." A two-person show, she and Jackson won additional acclaim when they took Stevie (1978) to film. Mona won the top critics supporting awards, including New York, Boston and Los Angeles, but was surprisingly snubbed by the Academy at Oscar time. Her final career years (in the early 1980s) were spent on TV with roles as Mrs. Higgins in a version of Shaw's Pygmalion (1981) (TV) starring 'Twiggy (I)' and 'Robert Powell (I)'; Nanny Hawkins in the epic miniseries "Brideshead Revisited" (1981) (mini); and the Queen Mum in Charles & Diana: A Royal Love Story (1982) (TV). Long married to actor 'Basil Dignam', he died in 1979. Mona passed on slightly less than a decade later in 1988 at age 84.

Stephen Sondheim Mini Biography

Sondheim's work as a composer-lyricist over the past four decades has set the standard for modern American musical theater. He has won a record seven Tony Awards for his songwriting, and received a Pulitzer Prize for Sunday in the Park with George. Sondheim was an unpaid and uncredited clapper boy on Beat the Devil (1953). He tried out as a contestant on "The $64,000 Question" (1955) in 1955. While not chosen, he did correctly identify 19 of the 21 films 'John Ford (I)' had directed up to that point.

On stage, generally speaking, the story is stopped or held back by songs, because that's the convention. Audiences enjoy the song and the singer, that's the point. Static action - if that's not an oxymoron - is accepted. It's what writer Burt Shevelove used to call "savouring the moment". That's a very tricky business on film. It's fine if the songs are presentational, as in a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers-style movie where you watch them for the fun of it, but not with storytelling songs. When the song is part of the action and working as dialogue, even two minutes is way too long.

Sarah Polley is an actress and director renowned in her native Canada for her political activism. Blessed with an extremely expressive face that enables directors to minimize dialog due to her uncanny ability to suggest a character's thoughts, Polley has become a favorite of critics for her sensitive portraits of wounded and conflicted young women in independent films. She was born into a show business family: her father, 'Michael Polley', appeared with her in the movie The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) and on the television series "Road to Avonlea" (1989); and her mother, 'Diane Polley (I)', was an actress and casting director. It was her mother's connections that launched Sarah, at her own insistence, on an acting career at the age of four, following in the footsteps of her older brother 'Mark Polley'. A second brother, 'John Buchan (II)', is a casting director and producer. Her career as a child actress shifted into high gear when she was cast as the Cockney waif Jody Turner in Lantern Hill (1990) (TV), for which she won a Gemini Award, the Canadian equivalent of the Emmy, in 1992. British character actor Harry Andrews had the sort of massive granite face and square jaw that would stamp that career, but he set himself apart with brilliant stage and screen work. He had graduated from Wrekin College in Shropshire and then moved on to the stage, appearing with Liverpool Repertory in 1933 and focusing on Shakespearean roles. He was befriended by stage star 'John Gielgud' who invited him to New York and Broadway as part of the cast of "Hamlet" in 1935. On the return to London, Andrews did a run of plays in the West End. Then Gielgud invited him into his own stage company. Soon after he was asked into the Old Vic Company by its director 'Laurence Olivier'. His roles were becoming increasingly substantial, authoritative parts to match his sharp and forceful, through-the-teeth delivery of lines. Next he did not pass up the opportunity to join the Stratford Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, where he spent a decade honing himself into an established, fine, versatile actor, described by the controversial London theater critic Kenneth Tynan as "the backbone of British theater." He came to the small screen before the large, having debuted in British experimental television in 1939, followed over a decade later with his debut on the ever expanding and fecund American playhouse TV in 1952. His big screen debut came the next year in a character part which would accent his career-from ancient to modern-the disciplined military man in The Red Beret (1953). Lee-Thompson's classic adventure Ice Cold in Alex (1958), his achievement as Sergeant Major Bert Wilson, the near psychotic martinet, opposite 'Sean Connery' and 'Ian Bannen', in The Hill (1965) was an over-the-top tour de force. That same year he was back in costume - having played many an ancient and medieval noble role through the 1950s - in something different - playing the great Renaissance architect Donato Bramante against 'Charlton Heston' as rival Michelangelo in The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965). Not a big part, nevertheless Andrews gave the role a subdued and matter-of-fact strength that well fit the ambitious architect of the fiery Pope Julius II (played with great verve by 'Rex Harrison'). While Andrews was also excellent with a tongue-in-cheek style for comedic roles, as in the send up, The Ruling Class (1972), he excelled against type as a flamboyant homosexual in the black comedy Entertaining Mr. Sloane (1970). He had said something like: "I don't want to be a star -- I want to be a good actor in good parts" - but his presence always made him standout. It was ironic that he had difficulty in memorizing lines. Sometime later co-star 'Alan Bates (I)' thought him very courageous for his obvious triumph over this impediment. Bates further remarked that Andrews' great sense of humor and no-nonsense personable character made him a favorite with younger actors as a continuous well of encouragement and learning experiences. Though his parts were smaller as he grew older, he filled each of his roles, big or small - over 100 of them - with a giant's footsteps.

Red West Mini Biography

Robert "Red" Gene West was known as a close friend of 'Elvis Presley' and a member of the Memphis Mafia. He first met Elvis in high school where he was a year behind him. West played football for the Memphis Tigers high school football team, boxed in the Golden Gloves and played football for Jones Junior College playing center. West lived with his mother, Lois West, in the Hurt Housing project in Memphis. West became Elvis's personal driver in driving Elvis, and band members 'Scotty Moore (II)', 'Bill Black (IV)', and later 'D.J. Fontana' to different cities in the South for live appearances from 1955 to 1956. West served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1956 to late 1958 and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia which allowed him to stay in contact with Elvis. On August 14, 1958, West's estranged father, Newton Thomas West, died, the same day as Elvis's mother, Gladys, died. After Elvis' discharge from the U.S. Army in 1960, West was employed as one of Elvis' bodyguards. Over the years, Elvis bought West a number of vehicles as he became a world-famous celebrity. West also became a movie stuntman and appeared in 16 'Elvis Presley' movies in the 1960s, usually playing extras or bit and supporting parts. West married one of Elvis's secretaries, 'Pat West (II)', on July 1, 1961. A man of many talents, West became a songwriter for songs that Elvis, 'Pat Boone (I)', 'Ricky Nelson (I)' and 'Johnny Rivers' recorded, including the classic tune "Separate Ways" for Elvis which won a BMI Award. In addition to the Elvis movies, West appeared in three 'Robert Conrad (I)' TV series "The Wild Wild West" (1965), "Baa Baa Black Sheep" (1976) and "The Duke" (1979). During the 1970s West, his cousin 'Del 'Sonny' West' and Dave Hebler were part of Elvis's bodyguards in transporting Elvis from city to city every day and keeping weirdo fans away from him. On July 13 1976, Vernon Presley, Elvis' father, fired West, Sonny West and Hebler from Elvis's employ after criticizing their heavy-handed tactics. The three of them collaborated on a book of their lives as Elvis's bodyguards which was published just two weeks before Elvis's death in 1977. West has since continued his acting career and his songwriting talent.

Daniel J. Lester Mini Biography

Costume Designer Dan Lester began his career managing a boutique at Fred Segal in Hollywood, California. While there he met a number of film industry artists and was encouraged to join their ranks. Lester took a job at Western Costume Company and helped to prepare many films and TV productions. After leaving Western, he worked in both mediums with highly respected designers like Grady Hunt, Theodora Van Runkle, Marianne Elliot and Moss Mabry. Eventually, Lester met and worked with Marilyn Vance on a string of very successful films including The Untouchables, Pretty Woman, Uncle Buck and The Rocketeer. Lester was accepted into The Costume Designers Guild, and continued a professional association with Ms. Vance on The Getaway, Little Monsters, Judgement Night, Used People and Sommersby. During this period, Lester received an Emmy nomination for his work on the miniseries Dallas, The Early Years. His first solo feature film design credit was on Peter Hyams sci-fi Timecop. Lester and Hyams have since worked together twice, on The Relic and Sudden Death. Lester worked again with Jon Amiel on the adventure-thriller The Core. After serious deliberations about entering the priesthood - he entered a seminary in 1956 - Martin Scorsese opted to channel his passions into film. He graduated from NYU as a film major in 1964. After New York, New York (1977) (which one critic described as a wife-abuse musical) and The Last Waltz (1978), Scorsese released Raging Bull (1980) dedicated to his mentor 'Haig Manoogian'. The biography of middleweight fighter 'Jake LaMotta' earned two Oscars (Actor - DeNiro, Editing - 'Thelma Schoonmaker') and was later selected as the best film of the decade by U.S. critic gods 'Gene Siskel' and 'Roger Ebert'. Scorsese then explored fans as pariah (The King of Comedy (1982)), dark-comic dreams (After Hours (1985)), and revisited pool shark Eddie Felson from The Hustler (1961) ( The Color of Money (1986) with 'Paul Newman (I)'). George Zucco Mini Biography

At 22, George Zucco decided to begin his stage career in earnest in the Canadian provinces in 1908. In the course of the following decade, he also performed in an American vaudeville tour with his young wife, Frances, in a routine called "The Suffragette." As World War I grew in scale, Zucco returned to England to join the army. He saw action and was wounded in his right arm by gunfire. Subsequent surgery partially handicapped the use of two fingers and a thumb. However, having honed his theatrical talents, he proceeded to enter the London stage scene and was rewarded with a developing career that made him a leading man as the 1920s progressed. By 1931 he began working in British sound films, his first being Dreyfus (1931) with 'Cedric Hardwicke'. What followed were 13 B-grade movies through 1935, until The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1936) with 'Roland Young (I)' and 'Ralph Richardson (I)'. Zucco was on his way to America and Broadway by late 1935. He had signed to play Disraeli opposite 'Helen Hayes (I)' in the original play "Victoria Regina," which ran from December 1935 to June 1936. After that came a Hollywood contract and his first American picture, Sinner Take All (1936). Zucco had a sharp hawk nose, magnetic dark eyes, and an arching brow that fit well with authoritative and intimidating characters. That same year, he was in the second installment of the "Thin Man" series, followed by a series of supporting roles in nine films in 1937, usually typed as an English doctor or lord character. They were good supporting roles in "A" films, but he was also taking on darker characters. This was evident in Charlie Chan in Honolulu (1938) and more so with Arrest Bulldog Drummond (1939). Here, he was Rolf Alferson, alias the criminal mastermind "The Stinger," who could administer a poisonous sting from a needle at the tip of his cane. It was a typical pop movie in the pulp mystery/horror genre with the usual sort of ending, but it started him on the road as a Hollywood arch villain. That same year, he was cast as Professor Moriarty, the brilliant archenemy of the world's most famous detective in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939). Also that year, he and Hardwicke reunited to play the dark clerical heavies in the classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939). Although into the early 1940s Zucco was still getting some variety in shady roles, he was increasingly accepting parts as mad doctors--ancient and otherwise--starting with The Mummy's Hand (1940), the sequel to the original The Mummy (1932). Although this was made by the relatively major Universal Pictures, Zucco began grinding out outlandish horror stuff for bottom-of-the-barrel Producers Releasing Corp. (PRC). It would be incorrect to say he sold out to the horror genre, though, even if horror buffs have made him their own. Into the later 1940s, he was still giving good accounts as nobles, judges and not-so-mad doctors in such "A" hits as Captain from Castile (1947), Joan of Arc (1948), and Madame Bovary (1949). Zucco was in real life an engaging personality and was also known as a very dependable actor. He suffered a stroke not long after his final film, David and Bathsheba (1951), once more in Egyptian garb but this time not even credited. He retired and lived on in fragile health. He evidently recovered his health enough to be offered the role of the mad scientist in Voodoo Woman (1957), but he declined. About that time, his health required a move to a nursing home, where he lived out his last years with dignity.
